Ministry Moments – Diaconate
According to the Bylaws of Centre Church, the Diaconate shall be responsible for the overall spiritual life of the church. In consultation with the Senior Pastor, the Diaconate shall be responsible for: Public worship, the Music Program, Sacrament of Communion, Ushers, Flowers, Weddings, Funerals and collations,
Filling the pulpit in the absence of the Senior Pastor, and all other matters having to do with the worship and spiritual life of the congregation.
Deacons do not do all these things. There are subcommittees that assist to perform some of these duties. For instance, there is a Music Committee, a Flower Committee and a flower delivery group. These groups will tell you what they do in another Ministry Moment.
Most of the Deacons’ duties involve worship services. Deacons set up the Sanctuary, prepare Communion, assist the Pastor with Baptisms, confirmation and anything else the Pastor may need during worship. We have Ushering Teams of parishioners who help Deacons usher on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Sunday of the month. If you would be interested in ushering on either a regular or fill-in basis, we would love to have you join our Ushering Team.
There are 9 Deacons and 1 Chairperson. We wear red nametags and are available to assist you or answer any questions or concerns you may have concerning the spiritual life of the church. We meet once a month with the Minister and the term of service is 3 years. A Deacon may serve for up to 2 terms. Deacons must be members of the church and are elected by the congregation at the annual meeting.
The current members of the Diaconate are: Margaret Waugh, Chair, David Clough, Dwight Decker, Doreen DiFillippo, Dominic Donadio, George Hayden, Annmarie Pendola, Bruce Weaver and Gage Whittier.
We have 4 Deacons whose terms are up this year, including the Chair. If you would be interested in becoming a Deacon, please speak to me. We are looking for new members!
Margaret Waugh, Diaconate Chair
