ALTAR EGO
By Rev. Dr. Calvin B. Kool

I appreciated how Rev. Dr. Bailey was challenged to Get Real yesterday in church, with the help of Allie Parker, “Assistant Minister” of the day, along with the the children during the Children's Message. The “Rev” was out of control, trying to take with him on his backpacking trip up Mt. Washington a golf club, bowling ball, and crock pot. What was he thinking, that there's a Holiday Inn with a golf course, bowling alley, and electricity on a mountain hiking trail? What am I going to do with him???

Nonetheless, as the children told him, pack light if you are going to follow Jesus. Allie Parker's pack had the essentials and nothing more. All voted for her pack, given it weighed about one-tenth of what Rev. Bailey had packed.

More importantly, the children said that if we are going to follow Jesus we are best prepared by packing some of the following items: Love, forgiveness, family, parents, teachers, our friends, kindness, patience, more love, music, food, water, flashlights, and bug spray (well, Jesus didn't have access to flashlights and bug spray in his day. Given how much time he spent outside, these things would come in handy now.)

Can you believe it, Rev. Bailey even brought his TV remote and a VCR tape for his backpacking trip? Allie Parker had the right idea, when following Jesus, pack light. It's not so many material things that we need, but rather, things of the heart and soul that Jesus teaches us.

Allie Parker gets the “Get Real and Keep the Faith” Award of the Week! Congratulations Allie!

Here's a good scripture to reflect on in these matters: Matthew 6:19-21: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
