Presidents

Have you ever been a President?

I was President of the Jamaica Plain-Forest Hills Kiwanis Club where I was a member while serving my first parish in Jamaica Plain. The President's job was to chair the weekly meetings, introduce speakers, run the business of the club, chair the Board meetings, and oversee the direction of the club during the term of office. The logo of Kiwanis was “We Build” and its mission was and is to serve the children of the world.

We would seek to find projects and programs in the community that we could support by means of our personal and organizational involvement as well as our financial support. Kiwanis also supported state, national, and international programs.

Serving in the office of President was an honor and a responsibility.

I haven't served as a President in any other position although I have served as a Chair of a few Committees throughout my life, a similar type of position.

When I joined the Kiwanis Club it was expected that I would immediately become involved in a committee and/or some form of responsibility, in addition to attending the weekly meetings. There were no committees or positions for spectator members. Training took place by being involved, pitching in, and giving of oneself. Within a few years I was President and because I had been an active member right from the start I was prepared to lead when it was my turn.

Jesus did discipleship training the same way. He called his disciples and immediately they followed. There is no mention of “Junior Disciples,” or “Discipleship Training Camp” in scripture. The disciples were disciples immediately and they learned by giving of themselves right from the start.

How did I become a disciple? I volunteered to teach the 5th and 6th grade class when I was in High School, perhaps 12th grade. Did I know what I was doing at the time? No, but I learned via the curriculum material that was given to me. I learned by following the examples of other teachers in the church. I learned through faith, study, and prayer. It was foolish, I know, but I wanted to make a difference and find my way as a disciple of Jesus Christ. I knew there was something inside of me yearning to get out, to be shared. I was not elected President of the church, of the Sunday School Board, nor was there such a position. I was, though, a leader. The most helpful resource available to me were the many examples that surrounded me in that loving and caring church community.

Have you been saying that someday you will be a disciple of Jesus? Have you been trying to find the “Spectator's Committee?” Have you been looking for the “Junior Disciples” club?

Jesus said it this way, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:24-25, NIV).

Want to be a President, a Chair, or a Disciple? Give fully of yourself to something that has a positive impact upon the lives of others and is consistent with the love and way of Jesus Christ. You may not be given one of those titles, but you will be a servant of the Lord and of God's people. There is no title more important than that!

Yours in Christ,
Dennis

Craft Group

The Craft Group will be getting together on Wednesday, February 27 at 10:00 a.m. We will meet downstairs in Todd Hall each Wednesday. We will be talking about what we would like to do for the spring.

This group is very low-key and is open to everyone. If you are crafty or not, new to the church, just want to socialize, etc., this is a great way to meet people. Please enter through the door from the parking lot where you will need to ring the bell as school is in session.

It’s nice to hear that others missed the group as much as I did. Please join us. Bring your ideas too. Hope to see you,

This is an exciting time for the children of the church and we thank you for recognizing their efforts.

Prayer Chain

For a number of years, Centre Church has had an active Prayer Chain. This chain is made up of church members who are “on call” to pray for a specific need. A prayer request is given to the “anchorperson” whose job it is to call the next person on the list. That person, will, in turn, relay the request to the next person, etc.

If you are in need of prayer or know of someone who is, (it need not be someone in our church or community), please call Edie Richard are 781-334-3874. Also, there is a Prayer Request Book in the narthex for those who may be more comfortable writing an anonymous request rather than contacting the anchorperson directly.
